Diabetes can affect the reproductive health of men & women

Diabetes is a fast-growing modern lifestyle disease with several people are being diagnosed. It is a condition where the body is unable to keep blood sugar levels in the normal range. There are three types of diabetes such as

  1. Type 1 diabetes:
    It occurs when the body's immune system attacks the digestive enzymes where insulin is produced. Insulin is a hormone that controls the blood sugar levels, keeping them in a healthy range. In type 1 diabetes, the digestive enzymes are unable to make enough insulin. The insulin is needed to control blood sugar levels.
  2. Type 2 diabetes:
    It is a progressive condition & it occurs over time as the digestive enzymes gradually becomes unable to produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels in the normal range & the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin. It Depends on the severity of type 2 diabetes, can be managed with diet, exercise, and medication.
  3. Gestational diabetes:
    It is high blood sugar that develops during pregnancy & usually disappears after giving birth. It can be managed with a healthy lifestyle like diet, exercise, etc. Sometimes medication is also needed for gestational diabetes.

Diabetes can improve the sexual health of both men and women. It can affect their fertility and the chance of getting pregnant while having a baby. When diabetes is managed to reduce their fertility issues of both men and women who have diabetes should consult their doctor for a review of their diabetes and a general health checkup at least three to six months before trying to have a pregnant.

  • In men, diabetes is seen to have low sperm count, semen volume, and greater sperm DNA damage.
  • In women, diabetes comes a secondary condition associated with hormonal ailments such as PCOS & Hyperthyroidism, which pose hurdles in conceiving naturally and may also lead to complications during pregnancy.

Diabetic couples can still conceive & provided their sugar levels are under control, and they maintained their healthy body weight. In utmost cases, infertility treatments such as IUI, IVF & ICSI treatments help to conceive who are suffering from diabetes.
